Why does my dog pull on the leash for the whole walk?

The leash becomes tight in the first metres, forward movement continues, and pulling quietly becomes the method that keeps the walk moving.

The door opens. Your dog moves forward. The leash tightens almost immediately.

You slow down, pull back, say the name, shorten the lead and keep going. Ten minutes later, both of you are still walking inside the same tension.

The walk did not suddenly become a pulling walk halfway through. It started without a clean first rhythm.

From the dog's position, the sequence can be simple: pressure appears, but movement continues.

That does not mean every pull is deliberate or that one technique explains every dog. Excitement, environment, learning history, equipment and individual needs all matter.

But one visible fact remains useful: if tight-leash movement repeatedly reaches the next smell, corner or dog, the sequence has no reason to end on its own.

Where it actually turns

The turn is often the first continued step after the leash becomes tight.

At that moment, the walk confirms what movement still works. Repeated corrections arrive inside the same forward sequence and become background information.

The useful change is not louder instruction. It is making loose-leash movement and forward movement belong together more consistently.

Why pulling back often creates a tugging system

Pulling backward can briefly change position, but it also adds more opposition to a body already moving forward.

Repeating the cue while the dog is fully engaged elsewhere can make the words less informative.

Stopping only after several metres of pulling arrives late. By then the tight-leash sequence has already produced movement.

A cleaner test changes the first step after tension, not the volume of the correction.

The move to test

Choose a short, low-pressure section of the walk and make one rule observable: forward movement restarts when the leash is loose.

When tension appears, stop without a long speech. Create enough reset for the leash to soften, then move again.

The first goal is not a perfect walk. It is a few clear repetitions in which the condition for forward movement stops changing.

Field test

TEST ONE CLEAN WALKING SECTION.

  1. 1Choose a quiet stretch short enough to practise without rushing.
  2. 2When the leash tightens, stop forward movement immediately and calmly.
  3. 3Wait for or create a simple return to slack without repeating many cues.
  4. 4Restart movement while the leash is loose and repeat consistently.
